Deconstructing a meal.

Riding a bike is the same anywhere. Right?
No matter where you are, you can rent any bike, and voila' you are riding away.

It's the same with cooking.
If you know how to read instructions, or cook some basic things, you can deconstruct any meal you've had at a restaurant and prepare it  for yourself at home.

Start with the ingredients you taste and see.
Decide how those ingredients have been treated: boiled, sauteed, or..?
Identify the main spice.

In Mexican cooking, you know you need an ingredient to give you heat, such as a pepper or a spice or two.  If you don't know, check the recipes on line.
Now put them together, with just the basic ingredients.

For salsa, or pico de gallo, you will need tomatoes, peppers, cilantro, onions, garlic, lime juice and salt and pepper.
Start our with one tomato, one pepper, a sprig of cilantro, a Tablespoon of chopped onions, a teaspoon of lime.
Taste and adjust.
Mix a separate batch with two tomatoes.
You get the idea.
You will end up with your own variation, your own spice mixture too.

For tacoes, you will need a protein, some vegetables, all grilled, then  add  Cumin and chili powder.  Chili powder is up to you.  Be careful with it.  Warm the tortillas before you add the filling and the salsa.

Now, I must admit, some meals are harder to deconstruct, such as complicated Chinese meals.

  1. Thanks Rosaria! I have big dreams (we'll see what this pg mama can actually pull off!) for lots of fresh salsa type ingredients in my garden.
